Caregivers Burnout

Hello everyone!!

In this post I would like to speak on behalf of all the people like me (mental illness patients); I just want to send a big THANK YOU to all the loyal caregivers that work tirelessly every day to make our lives better. I know that sometimes is difficult for you to believe that you are very important to us, because we may not know how to express our gratitude towards you, but believe me, although we do not say it often, we love you a lot and I do mean a lot… (remember our feelings are very strong)!!!!

Since you are very important to us, we want you to take good care of yourself. I know that a lot of you have been through a lot of pressure having to deal with our manic crisis, depressions, medications, therapies and all the extra baggage that a mental illness patient carry. Most of you tend to forget that sometimes you are going to need help as well . Maybe, a few hours to relax is all you need, or maybe a good night sleep would give you that additional strength that you need to continue. Having someone to talk to and express your feelings is an important part of taking care of yourself. If you don’t take time to recharge your body and your mind, this will likely lead you to feel anxious, angry or depress.

Remember your feelings count too. So do not wait to seek help for yourself. Do not feel guilty if you need to take 30 minutes to pamper yourself, go on! You deserve some alone time. Take that quiet walk that’s going to help you clear your mind, take the evening to do something that you like and enjoy. Go to your favorite restaurant or watch your favorite movie, but please do something for you!!!

Yes, you are a personal superhero to us, but remember even superheroes need time to think, to feel, to enjoy their favorite pastimes. We do not want to be a burden, we do not want to be a heavy bag that you have to keep carrying when you do not have any strength left. We really appreciate everything you do for us, and because of that, we do not want you to feel guilty if for any reason you feel drained, tired or just frustrated. You are our superheros, but you are still a human, you are allow to feel too!
